History
Founded in 1872, Rex invented much of modern Carnival ceremony - the title "King of Carnival," the colors, the anthem, and the daytime Fat Tuesday procession. Rex chose purple, green, and gold in 1872; the now-famous meanings (purple for justice, green for faith, gold for power) were assigned two decades later, by the 1892 Rex parade themed "Symbolism of Colors." The popular story that the colors honored visiting Russian Grand Duke Alexei is a debunked myth.
Signature throws
- Rex doubloon (Rex introduced the modern aluminum doubloon in 1960)
Where to watch
The classic Carnival corridor, and where nearly every major parade rolls. Most line up Uptown, head down St. Charles Avenue under the oaks, and finish on Canal Street downtown.
